Key Stage 5 (Years 12 to 13)

Pre-University Curriculum

At this stage, BXCL prepares students and equips them with the knowledge and skills for university and beyond. We offer the Cambridge International AS and A Level where a range of subjects is offered in almost any combination of choice . This flexibility means that our students can personalise a curriculum that specialises in a particular field e.g. Science, Arts or Commerce.

A Level Programme

About BXCL A Level

At BXCL we understand how crucial good A Level results are to your child’s future success. We offer high quality teaching and support to ensure that every child receives what they need to achieve success. Students at BXCL Advanced Learning Centre are motivated to succeed in an environment that stimulates them to challenge themselves while teachers are on hand to provide one-to-one guidance and additional support where necessary.

Our highly qualified teachers are experts in their respective fields, keeping abreast of curriculum developments and encouraging students to push themselves to their full potential. We work closely with all our students in order to fully understand where they are coming from, their aspirations and where their strengths lie, so we can devise a tailor-made personal study programme to help them achieve their full academic potential.

We help students excel through:

  • Having highly qualified teachers who are experts in their respective fields.
  • Outstanding teaching, combining the best traditional methods alongside modern educational practices.
  • Small, focused classes, facilitating interactive lessons.
  • Developing learners to become independent critical thinkers, who are prepared for future challenges.

Future studies

To prepare our students for university studies, we provide individualised guidance and counselling to help them find their best fit in tertiary education anywhere in the world. We assist and support our students all the way through the application process to the university of their choice.

To be successful during the first year of studying at a university require many things from a student. This includes efficient time management, an understanding about personal economy and budgeting, knowledge about how to make appointments, as well as skills like cooking and cleaning. Living on your own comes with the responsibility of being an accountable young adult who can manage both your studies and your free time. During pastoral lessons, we offer our Sixth Form students experiences and opportunities that allow them to develop and explore these skills. Our students are also encouraged to practise these skills on an everyday basis as they are taking active roles in managing their time in school with a mix of normal and non-teaching lessons.

Why Our A Level Programme

Laying A Strong Foundation

The final two years of school significantly shape and prepare your child for the years post-secondary. At this stage, they will have a greater responsibility in designing their curriculum around their strengths, competencies and interests. This introduces them to the decision-making process that will become a significant part of their lives. Your child will be encouraged to seek support when selecting the subjects to suit their requirements or to match their graduation expectations.

In Year 12 and 13, our vision is to ensure that our students stand out from the crowd, not only with great grades but with the skills to thrive in the 21st century. We live in a world of accelerating change. New industries are constantly being born as old ones become obsolete. Understanding these trends, we are committed to ensuring our students have the understanding and application of knowledge to maximise their success in the world of the future.

Our mission is to enhance your child’s capacity for high achievement by empowering them to attain the knowledge, skills, confidence and values that are characteristic of successful leaders.

During Year 12 and 13, we strive to provide not only the best teaching for academic success but a commitment to quality curriculum enrichment. Each student is provided with an expanded learning experience to attain increased qualifications that enhance both their university applications and career aspirations. Lessons are personalised for your child, allowing them to build on their individual aspirations and optimise their strengths and abilities.

An extensive enrichment programme runs at BXCL to allow your child the opportunity to experience and discover new areas of interest and competency beyond the classroom. The enrichment programme is built around the following areas. Our expert staff work with students to provide the following learning options

This offers a range of leadership roles to our Sixth Form students, tailored to their interests and strengths; most of the roles involve working directly with younger students and they are designed to be fulfilling and rewarding for the students involved, as well as the younger students they are interacting with.

The Extended Project (IPQ) is a single piece of work of a student’s choosing that required evidence of planning, preparation, research and independent learning. The IPQ gives A Level students excellent preparation for university-level study and helps to boost their applications to further education institutions abroad.

The Duke of Edinburgh is one of the most prestigious international award programmes for students 14 years of age and above. Participants design their own programme based on three key areas: Community Service, Physical Recreation and Personal Skills. The Award is divided into three stages: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, each having a set of requirements to fulfill. Students will also complete an adventurous journey as part of the award. Despite the award being non-competitive and voluntary in nature, it challenges participants to set, as well as reflect, on authentic and progressive goals relating to their own personal growth. Taking part in the international award will allow students to engage with their environment and interact with other societies.

BXCL is an official licensed Independent Award Centre (IAC) for The Duke of Edinburgh International Award. As a result, students have the opportunity to take part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s award at BXCL Advanced Learning Centre promoting the school as an avenue for creating life-long learners through authentic experiences and continued application of academic excellence in society.

Our Physical Education (Sports) programme is a recreational programme designed around a healthy and active lifestyle, with a focus on fun, development and social engagement. Most sports take place on campus with like-minded people in a friendly, non-competitive environment.

We are dedicated to offering our students a wide range of opportunities to allow each student to develop their skills and pursue their individual interests. To facilitate this, we have both co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The After School Activities programme changes on a termly basis and allows students the opportunity to become well-rounded and to develop an understanding and enjoyment of a range of fields. They are optional and students can choose to take as many as they wish.

BXCL offers an informal, friendly and supportive learning environment that helps our students gain a well-balanced education, while still achieving their full academic potential. Our pastoral care system provides students with the support they require in order to be able to focus on their studies and subsequently progress to competitive degrees at leading universities. We help them identify possible career paths and assist in the university application process.

All our students are assigned a personal tutor, who closely monitors their progress and welfare. Personal tutors keep track of the lesson attendance, punctuality and academic performance of the students for whom they are responsible. They also act as the first point of contact for any questions or concerns that students or their parents may have.

At BXCL, we allow our students the necessary freedom to develop as independent learners, but we also expect them to follow our rules. In addition to helping students with any problems they may encounter, personal tutors can also provide extra support, if required, when students are underperforming. Should this arise, personal tutors meet weekly with students to ensure targets are set and that progress is monitored even more closely.

By this stage in your child’s learning journey, individual competencies have been developed significantly. As the pursuit of individual excellence is our commitment, the range of subjects available for students to study at this level is broad and wide.

  • Art and Design
  • Biology
  • Business Studies
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Economy
  • English Literature
  • Geography
  • Global Perspectives
  • Mathematics
  • Further Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Psychology

Scholarships are awarded to those with exceptional talent, and while they are  mainly awarded to Sixth Form students, there may be some available for talented students in Years 10 and 11.

Being awared a scholarship to join our Sixth Form is a great honour. We set high expectations for all of our scholarship holders, not just in their pursuit of excellence but in their conduct and behaviour, setting the highest standards and acting as role models within school.
